Garmisch-Partenkirchen Residents Back Munich’s 2018 Winter Games Bid

9th May 2011

Munich's bid to bring the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to Germany has received the backing of residents in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, following a referendum.

Nearly 60 per cent of the electorate voted in the poll, with the OlympiJA petition - asking whether people supported the bid - receiving the backing of 58.1 per cent.

A second petition put before voters - NOlympia - asked whether contracts already signed should be re-examined. NOlympia received less than 50 per cent of the vote.

A spokesperson for the Munich 2018 Bid Committee said: "The majority of the people of Garmisch-Partenkirchen have voted in favour of Munich's bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

"It is a good day for Munich 2018, because where we had confidence, we now have certainty too. This democratic decision should now be accepted by everyone."
