London 2012 Security - Home Secretary Confirms 3,500 More Troops

13th July 2012

OlympicsHome Secretary Theresa May has confirmed that an additional 3,500 of military personnel will support security operations at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It comes after concerns were raised during venue security exercises over the ability of G4S - the private sector security solutions provider - to deliver the required number of guards.

In a statement to the House of Commons on 12 July, May said the additional 3,500 troops takes the total number of military personnel supporting the Games' security to 17,000.

May commented: "These military personnel have already started to deploy to venues to support the rolling search and lock-down process between now and the start of the Olympics. In consultation with LOCOG and G4S, we have now agreed that it would be prudent to deploy additional military support to provide greater reassurance."
