Ebbw Vale Sports Centre Plans Approved

5th May 2011

A new multi-million pound sports centre is to be developed at The Works:Ebbw Vale, South Wales, after the proposals were given the green light by Blaenau Gwent Council (BGC).

The local authority’s planning committee approved plans for the Cold Mill Plateau site, after the scheme was initially given the backing of the executive committee in January.

Due to replace the ageing Ebbw Vale Sports Centre, the new complex will boast a 25m, six-lane competition swimming pool; a fitness zone; a weights area; and a dance area.

A cafĂ© and two outdoor sports pitches – one grass and one synthetic – are also among plans for the scheme, as well as a multi-use games area.

It will form part of the wider regeneration of Ebbw Vale’s former steelworks site, which will also include investment in a new Learning Zone, an energy centre and a biodiversity centre.

BGC leader Des Hillman said: “Our bold and exciting ambition to regenerate the former steelworks site and transform leisure, education and training opportunities for the people of Blaenau Gwent is really stepping up a gear.”

Jason Owen, executive member for leisure, added: “The new sports centre will be a fantastic facility that will cater for people of all ages, including those who may normally experience barriers to sport and physical activity.”
