GBP7m Refurbishment Of East Kilbride's Dollan Aqua Centre Completed

Aqua Centre revamp completedVolleyball England has launched a new initiative to increase numbers of participants and spectators in beach sports with funding for beach courts across the UK. As part of its efforts to expand the sport, The national governing body has published a document titled Development of Beach Volleyball Courts.

East Kilbride's Dollan Aqua Centre has reopened to the public following the completion of a £7m refurbishment of the Grade A-listed venue, which was carried out by Clark Contracts.

The renovation of the complex - originally designed by Alexander Buchanan Campbell and first opened in 1968 - included structural works and new floor, wall and ceiling finishes.

Among the facilities at Dollan Aqua Centre is one of Scotland's five 50m competition pools and a health suite comprising a sauna, a steamroom, a sanarium and a spa bath.

A gym equipped with Life Fitness cardiovascular machines and HUR resistance equipment; a dance studio; water flumes; a crèche; and a coffee shop are also on offer at the complex.

Barr + Wray was appointed to undertake a £300,000 filter contract as part of the renovation, which included a revamp of the main pool's three filter vessels and fabrication of a fourth.

Alister MacDonald, managing director of Barr + Wray, said: "The work we have carried out to modernise and improve efficiency at Dollan Aqua Centre will generate long-term public savings."

South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture operates the venue on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council.
